Conversations on Mothering – The Beginning

I am a mom of four amazing young people who have blessed me, challenged me, sometimes scared me, taught me, made me laugh, made me cry, but mostly brought me immense joy. Mothering is tough especially when you are trying to juggle your professional life and parenthood.

There have been many times when I’ve been stumped by a knotty mothering problem and needed to do some studying. Sometimes the answer was still not clear and was only answered by experience over time. But, my biggest blessing and “knowledge jump” in mothering came from other mothers who had encountered similar situations. We all need these moms in our lives.

For 28+ years, I have balanced being a mother, a wife, and a Pediatrician. Many of you are doing the same, trying to make it all work. The good news is that when you stay the course, it all works out somehow. The bad news is that none of the children show up with a manual.

You read a couple of mothering books and you think you’ve got this, until the beautiful child shows up. Then you realize, you don’t got it. I often asked my babies why they did not read the same mothering books that I read. When my oldest was about 5, I asked her that question. Guess what she told me. She HAS read the same books, but I’m just not reading them correctly. Then, I knew I was in trouble.

Whatever your reasons for meeting me here, I pray that you garner some wisdom when things seem OK, encouragement when your basket seems too full, uplifting when things are hard, and some direction when you feel lost.

Most importantly, I wish you joy in the mothering journey. It CAN be had.

Enjoy the journey!
